Does fundraising feel scary? These 5 tips should help.

I know how intimidating asking for money can be.

Whether you’re asking for your organization or on behalf of a cause you’re passionate about, overcoming the fear and resistance that often come alongside asking for financial support can be so difficult.

The good news?

It gets easier over time. I promise.

Each time you step out of your comfort zone – each “no” you hear, each mistake you make, each success you celebrate – you’re building resilience and confidence.

Learning how to raise money is a journey. And like any journey, it becomes less intimidating with each step you take.

Every ask is an opportunity to learn, and grow, and get better. It’s not about perfection. It’s about progress and purpose.

If you find yourself struggling through a hard stage of the journey today, here are a few strategies and reminders that have helped me along the way. Maybe they’ll help you too.

  1. Remember Your Mission: When you feel hesitant about asking for money, it can be helpful to remind yourself how important your mission is and the positive impact you’re making in the world. Sometimes, this is all you need to build the confidence and motivation to invite someone to give.
  2. Know Your Audience: Remember, people give for THEIR reasons, not YOUR reasons. If you can understand the motivations and interests of the people you are asking for money, you can tailor your ask to their values and interests. Do that, and you will hear “yes” way more often.
  3. Practice, Practice, Practice: As with anything worth doing in life, practice makes perfect. The more you practice, the more comfortable and confident you will feel when it comes time to ask for money. Need a script? This might help.
  4. Don’t Be Afraid To Ask For Help: If you’re struggling with fear or resistance, consider seeking a mentor or a coach who can provide guidance and support. Don’t know who to ask? Let me know and I can make some recommendations.
  5. Remember That Rejection Is Normal: Never forget that rejection is a normal part of fundraising. Play this game long enough, and you will hear “no” way more often than “yes,” and that’s okay. Don’t let rejection discourage you – stay positive, stay focused, and keep pushing forward.

If those five reminders don’t help, here’s one more thing to remember…

Giving is magic!!!

When someone gives, not only does it fuel your mission, but it also brings joy and happiness to their life.

The next time your nerves start rattling before you make an ask, stop and remember all the good they’ll experience when they give.

And then finally, in case no one’s told you this week, never forget this…

YOU ARE AWESOME.

Not only that, but you already have everything you need to become successful at fundraising.

You have what it takes to make a difference in the lives of those who give AND receive.

All you have to do is ask.

Happy Friday friends!
