Three Lies Playing on Repeat in the Mind of Every Fundraiser

We’ve all heard it. Maybe we’ve even said it:

“People don’t want to be asked.”

False.

The truth?

People don’t want to be guilted, manipulated, or treated like an ATM.

But people do want to give. In fact, most people wish they could do more good in the world. Most of the time, they’re just not sure how.

If you work in fundraising, your job is to help people do more good in the world.

But sometimes we get in our own way. How?

By the lies we believe. Here are three that quietly shrink generosity:

Lie #1: “People are tired of hearing from us.”

If all you do is ask for money, maybe.

But when you show up with gratitude … When you tell stories of impact … When you remind people their giving is making a difference …

When you do those things consistently over time, people actually look forward to hearing from you.

Silence doesn’t build trust. Consistent, meaningful communication does.

Lie #2: “They’ll give if they really cared.”

Caring isn’t the same as giving.

Your most loyal supporters are also the busiest people. They’re managing jobs, kids, life.

They’re not sitting around refreshing your website waiting to donate.

Even your biggest fans need a reminder every now and then.

They need to know WHAT the NEED is, WHY it matters NOW, and HOW they can HELP.

Lie #3: “We’re bothering them.”

Nope. You’re offering them the chance to do something meaningful.

You’re not a nuisance. You’re a guide.

You’re giving people the opportunity to align their resources with their values. That’s a gift, not a burden.

Which of these lies are you most tempted to believe?

Comment, reply, send me a text … and let me know.

And if you’re tired of these false tapes blaring on repeat in your head, maybe it’s time you find a new playlist.

Here are a few I’d suggest:

“Giving is fun.”

“Fundraising is a sacred task that unleashes generosity and changes the world.”

“Donors want to help. It’s my job to show them how.”

Feel free to add your own to this list. And remember …

You’re not bothering people. You’re inviting them into something beautiful.

That’s not just your job. It’s your calling.

Keep up the good work friends!
